It’s officially here! After living in Charleston for over a year now and being asked the question “What should I do while I’m in Charleston?” so often, it was finally time to pull together all my favorite Charleston recommendations in one place! These are the places I find myself returning to again and again. The coffee shops I enjoy working from, restaurants I can’t stop recommending, favorite photo-worthy spots, and a few hidden gems sprinkled throughout the city.
Now, a disclaimer: I’m certainly not a Charleston expert. I’m still discovering new places all the time and falling more in love with this city every day. So, if you’re planning a visit, these are the spots I’m currently loving! While this guide focuses primarily on downtown Charleston, don’t overlook some of the incredible surrounding areas. I actually live in West Ashley, just outside of downtown, and communities like Mount Pleasant, James Island, Johns Island, and Daniel Island each have their own unique charm and are absolutely worth exploring.
Charleston is full of incredible places, and narrowing down a list of favorites wasn’t easy. From where to stay and what to eat to my favorite spots to explore. Without further ado…here’s my personal guide to Charleston, South Carolina!

Whether you’re looking for luxury accommodations, a boutique experience, or something budget-friendly, Charleston has no shortage of incredible places to stay.

The restaurant scene in Charleston is one of the best, so if I could only recommend a handful of places to eat in Charleston, this list would be the place to start.
Basic Kitchen -My favorite restaurant in Charleston. Fresh ingredients, beautiful presentation, and a menu that’s both healthy and incredibly flavorful. Also extremely accommodating with any dietary restrictions.
Two Bit Club – Located inside Hotel Richemont, this newer addition to Charleston’s food scene has quickly become one of my favorites. Every dish is packed with flavor, and the atmosphere feels elevated yet relaxed.
O-Ku Sushi – A go-to spot for sushi lovers offering creative rolls, fresh seafood, and a great atmosphere on King Street.

Shopping in Charleston is an experience all its own. The city offers everything from locally-owned boutiques and artisan markets to larger shopping destinations, making it easy to find something special.
King Street – The heart of Charleston shopping. You’ll find everything from local boutiques to national brands along this iconic stretch.
The Tiny Tassel – My absolute favorite shop in all of Charleston. From colorful accessories to Charleston-inspired gifts, I never leave empty-handed. Their charm bar experience is especially fun for groups and visitors.
Candlefish Makers Market – A unique Charleston shopping experience featuring local makers, gifts, home décor, and their famous candle-making workshops.
Charleston City Market – One of Charleston’s most historic attractions, featuring local artisans, handmade goods, and Lowcountry souvenirs.
Modern Manor – A beautifully curated boutique in Mount Pleasant featuring home décor, gifts, and unique finds.
Mount Pleasant Towne Centre – A convenient outdoor shopping center offering a mix of local and national retailers, plus some restaurants.
Marion Square Farmers Market – Held on Saturdays April through November, this market is one of the best ways to support local vendors while experiencing Charleston’s community atmosphere.
Sweet Jessamine’s Flower Truck – A charming flower truck that has become a beloved Charleston staple.
Helpful Tip: If you’re spending the day shopping on King Street, stop into The Charleston Place if you need a restroom break. Many smaller boutiques don’t offer public restrooms, and theirs are consistently clean and convenient. It’s worth a walk-through even without a restroom stop.

One of the best parts of visiting Charleston is that you’re never far from the water. Each beach has its own personality, making it easy to find one that fits what you’re looking for.
Folly Beach – My personal favorite. Folly has a laid-back, beach-town feel that’s perfect for a relaxed day by the ocean.
Sullivan’s Island – A favorite among locals, Sullivan’s offers a quieter beach experience with beautiful stretches of shoreline.
Isle of Palms – Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, restaurants, and nearby activities, Isle of Palms is a great choice if you’re looking for a mix of beach time and entertainment.
Kiawah Island – With pristine beaches and natural beauty, Kiawah Island offers a quieter and more secluded coastal experience. It’s a bit farther from downtown than Charleston’s other beaches, but the peaceful atmosphere and scenic views make it well worth the drive.

Charleston is full of beautiful places to explore, from historic streets and waterfront views to hidden gems tucked throughout the city.
Walk The Battery & Rainbow Row – Two of Charleston’s most iconic landmarks featuring waterfront views, historic homes, and endless photo opportunities.
Explore French Quarter & South of Broad – Take your time wandering these historic neighborhoods filled with cobblestone streets, hidden gardens, and stunning architecture.
Shem Creek – One of the best waterfront destinations in the area for dining, walking, and spotting dolphins.
Coastal Expeditions – Perfect for anyone wanting to get out on the water through guided tours, rentals, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing charters, and more.
Pitt Street Bridge – A scenic waterfront walk in Mount Pleasant that’s especially beautiful around sunrise and sunset.
Waterfront Park & Pineapple Fountain – One of downtown Charleston’s most recognizable attractions and a great place to relax by the harbor.
Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park – Located beneath the Ravenel Bridge, this park offers incredible harbor views and walking paths.
Hampton Park – One of Charleston’s most beautiful public parks featuring oak trees, walking paths, and seasonal blooms.
American Gardens – A hidden gem tucked into the heart of downtown Charleston, this small public garden is a peaceful spot to slow down, enjoy the flowers, and take a break from exploring the city.
Colonial Lake – One of my favorite places for a walk downtown. Surrounded by beautiful historic homes, Colonial Lake is a charming neighborhood park that’s especially lovely in the morning or around sunset.
Charleston’s Historic Plantations & Gardens – Sites such as Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, Boone Hall Plantation, and Middleton Place offer opportunities to explore centuries of Charleston history and preserved gardens. While these locations are visually beautiful, I encourage visitors to engage thoughtfully with the full history they represent, including the stories of the enslaved people whose labor shaped these properties. The sites offer educational exhibits and interpretation that help provide important historical context.

And before heading home, don’t skip a scoop from Off Track Ice Cream, one of the best dessert spots in Charleston, made from scratch with simple local ingredients. My only dessert recommendation in the city because it really is just that good!
One of my favorite things about Charleston is that there’s always something new to discover. From a restaurant that just opened, a hidden coffee shop, a quiet street lined with historic homes, or a new favorite spot by the water, this city has a way of making you fall in love with it over and over again.
